Working on numerous projects in biomedical research, I have collaborated with students and professionals in diverse fields–from medical doctors to physicists to engineers. This has required the ability to develop a common language that everyone understands in order to achieve our desired goals. I strongly believe that this applies to all levels of work and study. Moreover, being aware of this has shaped the way I communicate with young students: to be able to understand where they are coming from (that is, from which perspective they see the world) is essential to devise more effective teaching strategies. Working one-on-one provides the opportunity to take this to the highest level!

to ensure continued understanding along the way.” Chase Anderson, MIT alumnus

I believe that attentive listening and respect for individuality is crucial for achieving a successful mentor/student relationship. Therefore, my mentoring/teaching philosophy involves a friendly, compassionate approach to better understand the student's reality, identify his or her struggles and goals, establish a personal connection–a “language” we both will understand–and ultimately work together to tackle specific issues and topics.
My experience as tutor and mentor
Respect for individuality as the starting point
My teaching approach
Since my PhD program, I have routinely trained students–from high school summer programs to full-time undergraduate and graduate courses. Mentoring MIT students has been one of my most rewarding experiences to date. Several of them were under my supervision in the laboratory for as long as 4 years. I mentored them in the scientific method, covering topics and skills involving basic-to-applied biology, chemistry, and biophysics, to name a few. It is with pride that I speak of my contribution to their academic and personal growth. For me, it is extremely rewarding to watch their ever-successful journeys, as some of them, for example, are now confident, young adults thriving in top-rated medical schools.
