Originally from Brazil, I came to the USA to work as a scientist in 2005, and Boston has been my home since then. Here, I have had the amazing experience of working at renowned institutions such as MIT. My research endeavors cover the most diverse topics, from cancer and its treatments to how the body fights infections and excessive inflammation. I am a great enthusiast of all things science, and love to share it with my peers, students, and anyone interested in learning or teaching something exciting.
Always eager to help classmates with their own academic struggles when I was a young student myself, I knew early on that I would want to develop teaching skills in parallel with my BS degree. As a result, I pursued and received a second undergraduate degree in teaching. I strongly believe that this made me an even more dedicated and attentive mentor.

Over 20 years working as a researcher, a significant part of my activities has included mentoring young students. Although my primary assignments as a scientist were to design and perform experiments, analyze results, and write scientific articles, I have come to realize that the most rewarding things about my job were always related to the interactions with my students. Helping them to learn, to grow, to become independent and confident, and to succeed in their endeavors, has become the most personally gratifying aspect of my career. “Luiz's infectious curiosity inspired me to become fascinated by cancer science and ultimately helped me define my career path in medicine.” Will Watkins, MIT alumnus

Besides my enthusiasm for all things science, I'm passionate about cooking international food (latest accomplishments: homemade crystallized ginger and my own curry powder mix!).
I'm also a big fan of photographing cells under the microscope, and larger things too, like rabbits and hawks in the park in front of my house.
Additionally, I find great pleasure in travelling, as well as volunteering for an organization that prepares meals for individuals who are homebound with life-threatening conditions.
This picture I took was the winner of a photo contest promoted by MIT as part of a sustainability event. More about it here.
